The Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), in conjunction with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District One and other stakeholders, developed and adopted the first Lee Countywide Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Action Plan (BPSAP) in 2013. The goal of the BPSAP was to reduce bicycle and pedestrian fatalities and severe injury crashes yearly. This crash reduction goal is consistent with those expressed in the Florida Strategic Highway Safety Plan. The action plan identified a number of “action items” to be undertaken by responsible agencies on a short-term and long-term basis. One of the short-term action items of the 2013 BPSAP was to conduct Bicycle/Pedestrian Road Safety Audits (RSAs) on known high-crash corridors, with participation and support from all stakeholder agencies. To this end, ten roadway sections or intersections to be audited were identified during the first BPSAP development process. The Lee County MPO is excited to announce that the BPSAP is due to be updated in 2018, and the scope for services is currently working its way through our committees.
